Kicked Out

http://www.nascentmusic.com/mp3/shanecarey.net/20060128.mp3
The final podcast on shanecarey.net is a mellow, synth-laden thing, almost without percussion until a dance beat kicks in.

The Tempos That I Work At

http://www.nascentmusic.com/mp3/shanecarey.net/20060122.mp3
At long last, some new sounds, including a much more tribal percussion set. Light the torches, don the ceremonial headgear, and gather ’round the Moog.

Internal Struggle, Fatigue and Muddle

More Roachism as I play a bunch of intentionally quiet sounds until the accumulation of them turns into more swarmery.

And if anyone ever Googles the word “swarmery,” I figure I’ve got to be up there in the top five.

Dense, Evolving Clouds of Chords

http://www.nascentmusic.com/mp3/shanecarey.net/20060112.mp3
A slow build to a melodically ambiguous, Steve Roach-inspired collection of electro-synth-tribal-ambient swarmery.

Sometimes, dedication to the process puts me face to face with my own assumptions and fears. When it takes two minutes just to get the percussion loop going, the instinct is to edit that to get straight on to where the chords come in. Of course, that assumes that a listener is waiting for the good stuff, and that the percussion is not part of the good stuff, neither of which is necessarily true.

It’s only recently occurred to me that my listeners may be fans of improvised music — not merely of this particular sound that comes out of me — and so I’m still learning to trust that some might find it as important as I do for those two minutes to be left intact.

Still No New Sounds…

http://www.nascentmusic.com/mp3/shanecarey.net/20060108.mp3
I accidentally cut the loop an eighth note short. I accidentally left the Stick in mono mode and recorded the opening figure onto the loop. Instead of grinding the piece to a halt, these two accidents created the piece, and probably resulted in something much better than what I thought was possible with my current palette of sounds. Do I have any listeners who are yet unconvinced that these things write themselves?

The Demons, They Love To Party

http://www.nascentmusic.com/mp3/shanecarey.net/20060104.mp3
I did, in fact, get new background music. I did not, in fact, do all that other stuff, as the last week has been busier than I’d predicted. But new sounds and new ideas are still on the docket for the next couple of days, and there should be time since I’m jobless for a week. Meanwhile, the first recording of 2006 is as grim as ever.
