I am a Sicker Rose.

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060226.mp3
So tired, ill, run down, etc. that I was forced to summon my inner Icelandic post-rocker to wail on my behalf.

Part of the post-rock comparison is the dynamics: apparently I lack the tools to make the quiet parts more audible, so I hope nobody has to ride the volume button to listen to this.

When the Story is Told

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060223.mp3
By radio standards, they’re all epic, but by Nascent Music standards, this one’s tiny. It’s short and linear, but it got that way honestly: I ended not because I ran out, but because it was finished.

The Real and the Imaginary

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060219.mp3
The bassist was real. The drummer was imaginary. During the drum solo, only one man didn’t look confused.

I tried the preparation thing again. I think that this may, and should, evolve into some form of meditation before playing; but, for the moment, I’m too impatient, so I just try to think about it really hard.

The James Earl Jones Effect

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060216.mp3
Spent a little extra time preparing today.  Set up the recorder, tuned up, sat down… and then bobbed my head for about 20 minutes to try to internally fix the tempo while collecting my thoughts.  I’m sick, I’m tired, I’m at the end of a work week, I have some projects that need doing this weekend.  I wanted to try to conjure some representation of these thoughts and feelings that might influence tonight’s playing.

I have no idea if it worked.  But I thought it would probably be a good thing to try.

Down a Dark Alley

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060212.mp3
A two-parter: tells a nice story, then goes back to tell it again with a snarl.

I must learn not to talk about creating new sounds. The problem is, even if I do sit down to do it — which, in fact, I did — there’s no guarantee that my work will result in new sounds — which it did not. Maybe when I have the perfect equipment, I won’t constantly want to come up with new and better sounds. Until that time, I will probably work on it less often than I want but as often as I can, with less success than I’d like but with occasional genuine improvements. It’ll have to do.

Like Praying Wrong

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060204.mp3

As I slowly adjust to the schedule of a new job, I’m learning the characteristics and pitfalls of recording at various times of day. This one, recorded some time before 6AM, combines the laziness of a Saturday with the disorientation of being up early (even though I’m actually at the end of my “day”): i.e., it’s unfocused. But there are things I like about it, particularly the way the ending surprised me.

I’m hoping for the motivation to make some interesting sound changes very soon, and to post a recording with them as early as tomorrow morning.

Welcome to Nascent Music

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/02/nm20060201.mp3

The first official podcast of NascentMusic.com is probably a good introduction to the series, all the layers and looping and operator error in representative measure. Or perhaps I’m making no sense. Anyway, welcome to Nascent Music.
