Gimme an Eh

The first of two recorded on the road in Toronto. Really raw, even out of tune, but with something living in it.

Agitated

More unprocessed Stick playing the unprocessed turmoil in my mind.

Listening to the music playing behind the intro, I’m aware that I like that synth sound a lot more than what I’m doing with the clean Stick sound. Partly I would like to improve at the Stick, to be able to play a wider variety of sounds and come closer to that ambient vibe without all the equipment. But partly I’m playing clean just because I need a break from all this gear, and perhaps in the long run I ought to try to weather my gear frustration in order to return to that sound that I love. (Though this won’t be an option until September, as my next two podcasts will be recorded on the road.)

I haven’t received much feedback about this latest change in sound. Are you digging it, or just patiently waiting until I return to form?  Drop me an email if you have an opinion; the address is at the end of the podcast.  In the mean time, thanks for sticking around, either way.

Surf’s Up!

http://nascentmusic.com/mp3/2006/08/nm20060810.mp3
My surf music comes more from The Mermen than The Beach Boys (not that there’s anything wrong with Wilson et al), so if this doesn’t sound like surf music to you then I don’t mind being wrong. (Then again, I was never sure whether “tribal ambient” was the best way to describe my usual stuff, either.)

I forgot to mention it in the intro, but watch out for those dynamics.  For some reason I could not get the compressor to even out those distorted parts, so don’t turn it up too much during the quiet bits.

And And

Too often changed, too little developed. Meandering, you might call it. There are some nice sounds in there, but I had a rough time of it.
